Engrave with letters glass
Do you want to engrave glass? Do you know, there are also methods and tools with which you can do the engraving yourself? We would like to introduce you to this option. You can now, on the one hand, consider whether this would be a suitable option for you. If not, then you still have the chance to engrave your glass.
But you have lost nothing in both cases, because you have learned something exciting, right?
Specifically, we will explain today how to engrave letters on a glass.
You need it for engraving glass
Let's start with the products you need for glass engraving. These are:
- glass objects to engrave,
- Atz paste,
- glass cleaner,
- Blue or green painter's band,
- plastic gloves,
- Letter sticker
- clothes that you can spot.
Make the glass surface clean
First and foremost, the glass has to be cleaned perfectly. For this you need matching fabric and detergent. See that you can really get rid of all the dirt, dust, and fingerprints on the items you want to engrave.
Apply the painter's tape
Now you would have to apply a piece of the painter's tape to the glass to be engraved. This covers, first, the area that must not be scratched. In addition, you can determine exactly the area in which the inscription, or the initials are, which you want to engrave on the glass. Most often, the best effect is when you choose the top third of the object. You can also choose another position.
See that the painter's tape has just been pasted on
For round and oval glass objects, you often have the problem that the tape is not quite straight. There are many wrinkles in this. As a result, the lower line is not quite straight. However, this is bad for the result later, because it will not be very straight and precise. Make sure that the painter's tape was smoothed really well around the area to be engraved. Of course, if you engrave a piece of glass that is smooth, you do not have that problem.
Attach the letters
Now we come to the next stage of the process, which is probably no less tricky. You will need to attach the letters easily under the edge of the tape. Make an effort to pinpoint the position of the letters and avoid slipping.
Be very patient while performing these actions. Attaching the letters is the hardest part of the process for most people. It's normal if you have a bit of problems. But if you take enough time to keep the painter's tape straight and smooth, the result will be really worthwhile.
To center the word
For the word or initials to be centered, it is best to start with the middle letter positioning. After you have determined exactly the middle, you will be able to distribute the others easier.
Malerband around all sides of the letters
Now you should also attach to the bottom and sides of the letters Malerband. You should also pay particular attention to this step of glass engraving. The painter's band should be the same distance from the letters on all sides. Here, too, what we have just said about the strip over the letter applies: Take your time to adapt everything really well. Only then would you achieve results that would satisfy you.
Not too big areas at once!
It is important that you do not engrave too large areas on the glass at once. For this reason, it is important that the letters are close to each other. Everything works well with this technique, which we are talking about today. Otherwise you would just have to engrave your glass.
Put on the plastic gloves
It is important that you now put on the plastic gloves. The Atz paste is very dangerous to your health and you should not underestimate this fact.
Also, you should protect your body and best wear special glasses.
Apply the atz paste
Now you should apply a layer of the Atz paste to the glass surface with a suitable stick. It may be that this has some visible pieces of crystal. That's natural. Unfortunately, the results in the places where there were crystals will be rather odd. With another stick you could remove all pieces of crystal from the area to be processed.
Leave the atz paste for five minutes
Now you would have to leave the Atz paste on the glass for five minutes. It is very important that you stick to it for the best possible results. It should not be less. But they can be around ten minutes. The longer waiting time does not hurt, but brings no special advantages.
After about two to three minutes, use the stick to straighten the etch-paste layer and around it. Bubble and crystals should be avoided. As we just said, they should not allow them to spoil the good results.
Remove the atz paste
Now you can remove the Atz paste. Never remove your gloves, protective clothing and glasses. Depending on what kind of sink you have, you can do the washing up there. Make sure that the surface is not scratched and spoiled.
Dry the glass well and do not use it for a while
The letters and the painter's tape are easier to remove with warm water
Do not try the engraving on valuable glasses
As you may have seen, glass engraving is not super complicated in this way. But at the same time you can do a lot wrong with some clumsiness. For this reason, you should rather not "train" on your precious glasses. For really sophisticated figures and solutions you should prefer to have a glass set engraved professionally.
There you also use other, safe methods
With this technique, you can make a complete set of glasses
Mason jars are just perfect for that
